Species & Size
The reindeer around Lapland are Rangifer tarandus tarandus, a semi-domesticated reindeer derived from mountain reindeer.
Male reindeer (stags) weigh about 90-180 kg and have a shoulder (withers) height of about 110 cm.
Female reindeer (does) are smaller: ~60-100 kg, with a withers height of about 90 cm.
Antlers of male reindeer can weigh up to ~10 kg.
Life Expectancy & Life Cycle
Typical life expectancy: 10-15 years, though some can reach up to 20 years.
Rutting season: September–October.
Pregnancy (gestation) lasts about 7 months.
Calving: Usually one calf born in May; newborns weigh about 4-6 kg.
Calves become independent around one year old.
Diet & Seasonal Behavior
Spring/Summer: Eat grasses, hay, twigs, leaf buds; later in summer, also tree and bush leaves.
Autumn: Add mushrooms along with other vegetation types.
Winter: When snow covers much vegetation, lichen becomes especially important as a food source.
Adaptations to Arctic Conditions
Hooves: Spread widely, with sharp edges to dig through snow; good for bogs/swamps.
Fur: Thick and insulating. Reindeer have hollow guard hairs plus a dense undercoat; fur changes with seasons (thicker in winter).
Antlers: Grow rapidly in summer, protected by a velvet skin until fully grown; males use them during rut then shed them; females also use antlers (for feeding, protecting young) and retain them longer.
Herding, Ownership & Human Interaction
Finnish reindeer are semi-wild and each animal has an owner, marked by an ear tag or mark.
There are about 200,000 reindeer in Northern Finland under herding practices.
Twice a year there is a reindeer “round-up” (collecting all reindeer): midsummer and autumn. During this time reindeer are counted, calves are tagged / ear-marked, and animals might be sorted (e.g. for slaughter, for health checks).
Cultural & Tourism Roles
Reindeer are deeply integrated into Lapland culture: used historically not only for meat, fur, transport, milk, but also as part of Sami heritage. Turasition from traditional herding to modern practices includes use in tourism (sleigh rides, farm visits, experiences).
Santa Claus Reindeer in Rovaniemi provides reindeer sleigh rides, farm visits, tourism programs, etc.
